Thinking like a designer
Readings due before class on Wednesday, November 8, 2017
Required
- Chapters 5 and 6 in Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic, Storytelling with DataCole Nussbaumer Knaflic, Storytelling with Data: A Data Visualization Guide for Business Professionals (Hoboken, New Jersey: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2015).
- Watch and work through these tutorials about Illustrator (you can speed them up to 1.5× or 2× if you want): These are all specific to Illustrator and InDesign, but the same principles apply to Inkscape and Scribus (though tools and options will have different names). I recommend learning the Adobe products now while you have free or cheap access to them, and then in the future when you won’t necessarily have access to Adobe’s Creative Cloud, you’ll be able to translate your skills to Inkscape or Scribus.
- Watch and work through these tutorials about InDesign (again, feel free to speed them up):
Questions to reflect on
- How are affordances, accessibility, and aesthetics related to CRAP and the Gestalt principles of visual perception?
- What are the common elements of good design in each of Nussbaumer Knaflic’s examples in chapter 6?
